How to resolve differing Bible interpretations Part 6
The Text:
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (KJV)
Act 2:38 and Peter said unto them, `Reform, and be baptized each of you on the name of Jesus Christ, to remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)
Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "You must repent -- and, as an expression of it, let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ -- that you may have your sins forgiven; and then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, (Williams NT)
The Challenge:
- Acts 2:38 (Pentecostals vs. Baptists): "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Pentecostals emphasize baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, whereas Baptists emphasize baptism as a symbol of professing faith.

Thomas Zike So if I repent and get baptized and I have faith that my sins are forgiven and that I received the Holy Spirit through water baptism and I make every effort to live like Jesus, and I die and stand before God on Judgement Day, he is going to send me to hell because I didn't read all of the commentaries on Acts 2:26-38, especially yours. Or let's reverse this, and say one who believes he was saved because he repented and was baptised for the forgiveness of sins, and believes he receives the Holy Spirit, but believes the baptism was a spiritual baptism of the Holy Spirit and that water baptism was only a symbol and not really necessary and they make every effort to live like Jesus, and they die and stand before God on Judgement Day. Is he is going to send them to hell because they didn't read all of the commentaries on Acts 2:26-38 that were written by commentators with a Church of Christ background? By the way they both had Faith in Jesus.Jerry Thank you, Thomas Zike, for your excellent questions! "Saving faith," or faith that results in genuine salvation, is based on meeting the conditions specified in the Gospel of John, as at John 5:24. Joh 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV) Joh 5:24 'Verily, verily, I say to you—He who is hearing my word, and is believing Him who sent me, hath life age-during, and to judgment he doth not come, but hath passed out of the death to the life. (YLT, Young's Literal Translation) Joh 5:24 "I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged guilty. They have already left death and have entered into life. (ERV, Easy to Read Version) The terms of salvation found in the New Testament include continuing belief and a continuing hearing of what Jesus said and taught. Ritual water baptism is not among those terms, though real baptism accomplished by the Holy Spirit is included in the terms of salvation. This real baptism results in regenerative change, making believers into "new creatures" or "a new creation" in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). This regenerative change results in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23). The Gospel of John contains a purpose statement at John 20:31, Joh 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. It is possible, therefore, to read and believe what is written in the Gospel of John itself, and so come to a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
